Who is Eligible for the Rs. 5,000 Allowance?

According to official government circulars, the eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • Registration Deadline: Expectant mothers must have been registered at their local Government Maternal Clinics on or before November 30, 2025.

  • Target Group: The allowance is primarily focused on mothers in their critical stages of pregnancy (specifically highlighted for those in their 10th, 11th, and 12th months of the program cycle) and lactating mothers.

  • Frequency: This is a one-time special allowance provided as an emergency nutrition intervention.

Distribution Date and Process

The distribution of the nutrition allowance commenced on December 16, 2025.

  • Where to Collect: Eligible mothers can receive the allowance or vouchers through their respective Divisional Secretariat (Pradeshiya Lekam) offices.

  • Coordination: The program is being implemented by the National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development.

  • How to Claim: Mothers should present their Clinic Record Book (Mother’s Card) and National Identity Card (NIC) at the designated distribution centers or the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) office in their area.

Recommended Nutrition Items to Purchase

While the allowance is provided as a financial grant or voucher, health authorities recommend utilizing the Rs. 5,000 for high-protein and iron-rich food items such as:

  1. Proteins: Dhal (parippu), Chickpeas (kadala), Green gram (payaru), and Soya meat.
  2. Animal Protein: Eggs, Sprats (neththali), and Dried fish.
  3. Dairy: Full cream milk powder or fresh milk.
  4. Cereals: Red rice, Samaposha, or high-nutrient grains.
