A tragic shooting in Markham, Canada, has claimed the life of a young woman from Sri Lanka. Ragudas Nilakshi, a 20-year-old resident of Markham and originally from Kondavil West, Jaffna, was fatally shot on Friday, March 7, 2025.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at a residence near Castlemore Avenue and Swan Park Road. The shooting left one man critically injured and undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Authorities revealed that multiple rounds were fired at the house. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the two victims along with a German Shepherd dog that had also been shot and killed.
Both victims were immediately taken to the hospital, but Nilakshi succumbed to her injuries. The police have yet to make any arrests, though surveillance footage from the area has been released for investigation.
"This house has been targeted multiple times. The perpetrators came here with a plan and executed this brutal attack," stated police officer Kevin Nepreza.
Further investigations revealed that the same house had been attacked three times previously—in February and twice in March 2024.
The police urge anyone with security camera footage or information about the incident to come forward and contact York Police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
"Two suspects were seen fleeing the scene in a black, four-door Acura TLX," said Nepreza. "Investigators are working to determine whether this was a targeted shooting."
A police helicopter was seen patrolling the area throughout the day as authorities continued their investigation.
